Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has won the ESPY for the best record-breaking performance.
Ovechkin was recognized on Wednesday at the ESPYs for overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time goals leader this past season. He scored 44 goals — the third most in the league — to break the record, despite missing 16 games with a broken leg.
"I'm sorry I can't be there but I'm back home and getting ready for next season. I just want to say huge thanks to all the fans. Your support means everything to me and my family. To my coaches, teammates and the entire Capitals organization, thank you for all the support. We accomplish something special this season and we did it together," Ovechkin said. "A special thank you to Wayne Gretzky and his family for always being there for me, and to my wife, kids and whole family, thank you for everything. See you soon, take care."
The 39-year-old is entering his 21st NHL season and the final year of his contract, and he sits three goals away from 900. He'd be the first player in NHL history to hit that mark.
