Report: Capitals' Tom Wilson Won't Appeal Six-Game Suspension For High-Sticking Leafs' Noah Gregor

The Washington Capitals will see Tom Wilson serve the remainder of his six-game suspension, as he will reportedly not appeal the NHL Department of Player Safety's ruling on his hit on Noah Gregor.

Per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, Wilson and the NHL Players' Association declined the option to file an appeal on the matter. He has four games remaining in the six-game suspension, which he received on Friday.

This is the sixth suspension of Wilson's nine-year NHL career. The play unfolded on Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs when he was skating and backchecking in the defensive zone. He was tied up with Gregor, and as the Maple Leafs forward got in front of him, Wilson swung his stick in what the league called an "extremely reckless fashion" and hit Gregor in the face, breaking some of his teeth.

Per Gregor, Wilson apologized immediately, but he was given a four-minute double-minor penalty for high sticking, leading to the suspension.

"As Wilson and Gregor separate after the hit, Wilson draws his stick back, then swings it forward in an extremely reckless fashion, making direct and forceful contact with Gregor's face. This is high sticking," the NHL Department of Player Safety's video ruling explained. "It is important to note that Wilson is solely in control of his actions throughout this play. While he acknowledged Wilson's assertion that he did not mean to strike Gregor in the face, the fact remains that Wilson's stick is drawn back behind him, then swung forcefully and recklessly into his opponent.

"This is not a case in which two players are fully engaged in influencing each others' actions, nor is it a case in which a player is off balance and his stick swings during an attempt to regain his footing," the video added. "Wilson's actions on this play are fully under his own control, irresponsible and not related to any sort of legitimate hockey action. He is accountable for the dangerous result of the play, which is a direct and forceful blow to an opponent's head by a player with a substantial track record of supplemental discipline."

Wilson, who is one of the Capitals' alternate captains, has 32 points in 66 games this season for D.C. He is eligible to return to the lineup on April 4 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
