Jakob Chychrun saw Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis wearing his jersey the other night at Capital One Arena, and sure enough, it was a sign of things to come.
After seeing Leonsis, Chychrun's agent called, and talks that'd slowed down started to pick up again between him and the Capitals until both sides landed on an eight-year, $72 million contract extension on Tuesday.
"We were really hoping to get something done," Chychrun said, adding, "We're very happy."
Chychrun has picked up 18 goals and 25 assists for a career-high 43 points through 65 games this season while helping establish a new identity on the Capitals blue line. Over the last three seasons, only Cale Makar and Roman Josi have more goals among NHL defensemen.
"Chychy's an elite talent in the league. Any time you can keep somebody like that in the organization for a long time, it gives you an opportunity to take a run at things," Tom Wilson said.
The 26-year-old said that it was an easy decision to stay in the District, as he's enjoyed his time on and off the ice and has felt at home since being acquired from the Ottawa Senators back in July.
"It's just been awesome," Chychrun said. "It's been a blessing for my wife and I. We've just from day one felt so comfortable here, so happy here. The organization’s incredible. Obviously a group of guys and what we have in this room is so special and I’ve loved working with the coaching staff. everything’s been so great... we're very happy.
"It's been such a great experience, and it was something that if there was a number we were comfortable with, we were more happy than to stay and not test free agency. I'm really happy with how things went."
With Chychrun signed, Washington's defense corps is locked up through at least next year, and the core is well established for the future with Chychrun, Rasmus Sandin and Martin Fehervary rounding out the left side.
"We have a lot of confidence in our back end and the players that we have," Chychrun said. "You've seen it this year with the way we played and guys contributing... to have everyone signed through at least next season is a huge bonus."
Now that the outstanding business is done, Chychrun is looking forward to just playing hockey and not having to worry about outside distractions as he aims to make his first legitimate run at a Stanley Cup this spring.
"(It's nice) getting something done and (to) not have to think about it going into the playoffs," Chychrun said. "Just go out and do everything we can to win.”
