As time passes, it seems more and more likely that centre Connor Zary will not be getting a long-term deal.

The restricted free-agent came into the off-season looking for an extension, but it seems like the Flames and Zary are far apart on the deal, with the divisive subject being the 23-year-old's injury history. Most of it having to do with his knee.

At this point, the 2020 Draft 24th-overall pick should put on his big boy pants and focus on delivering results for training camp, which is just about a month away. Even if it means signing the qualifying offer.

He needs to dig deep inside and find a new type of inspiration to compete at a high level, because this isn't the first time a Flames player has had a major setback in a promising career.

Flames fans may be familiar with another former Calgary player who also suffered a knee injury and had to miss significant time. This is franchise legend Gary Suter who was put on the shelf in the 1986-87 season, missing 12 games while putting up 49 points in 68 games.

How did he respond the following season?

He had the best season of his career as his 70 assists, 91 points and rating of +39 were career-bests. He played in the 1988 All-Star Game, was named to the Second All-Star Team and was a finalist for the Norris Trophy.

Zary is not in a too different situation as he had an ankle injury during his first full season with the AHL Calgary Wranglers that put him on the shelf for just over a month, as well as multiple injuries to his knee last season with the Flames.

But he has a spot on the roster and should look to Suter's 1987-88 season as motivation.

Make a comeback like no other and see how the offers come piling in.

    So you didn't get a long-term deal?

You've got to make them want to give you a deal...
