The Columbus Blue Jackets' players from Team Canada are heading home.
Yes, that's right — yesterday, Canada suffered a massive upset against Denmark and were eliminated from the IIHF 2025 World Championships.
After dominating the first period, the game started to shift back to even, and Canada only had a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, after a questionable call on a stick lift by Ryan O'Reilly, Denmark scored to tie the game.
The game remained tied until, with less than a minute left, Denmark threw the puck on net and Nick Olesen picked up the rebound and shot it past Jordan Binnington to take the lead with only 49 seconds left in the third.
Canada tried to push right off the faceoff. They were strong on the puck for the last 49 seconds but couldn’t get a good shot on net. Sadly, the game came to an end, and the Blue Jackets players and coaches will now head home and start their preparation for next season.
It is a tough loss to face — they were the heavy favourite in the matchup but still fell victim to one of the biggest upsets in international hockey history.
There won’t be many more times that Sidney Crosby gets to represent his country, and unfortunately, the Blue Jackets players won’t get the chance to win gold with their childhood idol.
