Looking back on the Brandon Wheat Kings' decision to part ways with head coach Les Jackson during the 1981-82 season.
In this edition of The Hockey News, we travel back to 1981 as Gregg Drinnan details the Brandon Wheat King's decision to relieve then-head coach Les Jackson, replacing him with Dunc McCallum. As Drinnan writes, Brandon made the switch after they had dropped a 10-7 decision to the Regina Pats, which was the team's seventh loss in a row. This column also contains a great quote from the owner, Jack Brockest, who said, "It's the old story that you can't fire 19 guys."
On the same page, you can find a quick update on WHL teams around the league, including details of a trade between the Spokane Flyers and Medicine Hat Tigers. The edition also included a quick blurb about WHL Player of the Week, Jock Callender. In his first 24 games of the season, Callender scored 32 goals and recorded 58 points for the Regina Pats.
Lastly, make sure to check out a great piece by Dick Chubey about former WHL goaltender Andy Moog. In the article, he talks to the former Edmonton Oilers goalie about hearing his name chanted by fans after he stood on his head in the 1980 postseason. It is a great insight into what players think when over 17,000 people start a chant in their honour.
