The Ottawa Charge currently find themselves in a spot they didn't want to be: six points out of a playoff spot with only 12 games remaining in the season. From this point on, it's do or die for Ottawa's playoff hopes.
“This league, from Game 1 to Game 30, you’ve got to get points," said Ottawa head coach Carla MacLeod. "Right now, it’s just about executing and getting the job done. We’ve got to start stringing some games together and collect some three points, because you can move in a hurry in the standings. We really believe that the momentum is starting to shift to us, and we feel that we can wear teams down.”
The problem for Ottawa is, time is running out to wear down team in games, or on the season. The bulk of Ottawa's roster has offensively under performed this season including captain Brianne Jenner who has only seven points in 16 games this season. She's not alone. Katerina Mrazova has battled injuries all season, and top pick Danielle Serdachny has threatened, but has yet to break out.
It has left Ottawa with the least goals in the PWHL with only 39 through 18 games, an average of only 2.16 goals per game. They also have the worst goal differential in the PWHL sitting at -11. Even the team just ahead of them in the standings, the Boston Fleet have score 15 more goals than Ottawa, and have a +5 differential.
With a dozen games remaining, every game is a must win for the Ottawa Charge if they hope to avoid missing the PWHL playoffs for the second straight season.
