The NHL launched a series celebrating the first 25 years of the 21st century by announcing every team's first and second quarter-century teams. On Saturday, Jan. 11, the league will announce who made the teams from the Calgary Flames.
Even though the Flames have only qualified for the playoffs ten times over the past 25 years, some extraordinary players have worn red, including the group that advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.
Realistically, hockey fans across the globe will recognize many of the names on the Flames teams. These teams will most likely feature Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla and goalie Miikka Kiprusoff, whose jerseys hang in the rafters of the Saddledome.
Meanwhile, some more recent stars, including Matthew Tkachuk and the late great Johnny Gaudreau, have resumes worthy of inclusion on these quarter-century teams.
Moreover, Calgary's two most recent captains, Mark Giordano and Mikael Backlund, could also find their names on these lineups.
After the Flames play the Los Angeles Kings on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night, Scott Oake said that two players from the quarter-century teams would be on the After Hours show and that fans should submit their questions.
Who should be on the Flames' quarter-century teams outside the obvious choices? Let us know in the comments.
