Rajaniemi has spent the majority of the season in the ECHL

4 Nations Face-Off Auston Matthews USA Captain

The Bridgeport Islanders have recalled defenseman Matias Rajaniemi from the ECHL's Worcester Railers, it was announced Thursday.

Rajaniemi, a 2020 sixth round pick of the New York Islanders, is in his first season in North America where he has split time between Bridgeport and Worcester. Although he has been held pointless in four AHL games, Rajaniemi has put up three goals and six points in 39 ECHL games.

Prior to making the trek overseas, Rajaniemi spent parts of the past five seasons playing in Finland's top pro league (Liiga), scoring four goals and adding 26 assists for 30 points in 200 career regular season games.

Although his stats may not jump off the page, Rajaniemi makes smart decisions with the puck and can be relied upon to chip in on offense when required. As he gets set to re-join Bridgeport, he will find success in playing his game and using his size to shut down scoring chances in his own zone.
