AHLer Alden Hirschfeld has seizure on bench, in stable condition

AHL winger Alden Hirschfeld suffered a seizure on the Grand Rapids Griffins bench Friday night and was sent to hospital in stable condition. Hirschfeld, 27, was in his fifth game of the season with the Griffins.

Friday night’s AHL game between the Grand Rapids Griffins and Milwaukee Admirals had an incredibly scary moment when Griffins winger Alden Hirschfeld collapsed on the Grand Rapids bench.

Hirschfeld, 27, was on the bench with less than seven minutes remaining in the second period when the game was halted because of a medical emergency. Hirscheld, who had recently been recalled from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, was quickly attended to by medical staff at Van Andel Arena and both teams were sent to the dressing room.

While the game was delayed, the medical staff continued to attend to Hirschfeld. The delay lasted several minutes, after which time Hirschfeld was placed on a stretcher and taken off the ice. Per the Griffins, Hirschfeld “was transported to a local hospital in stable condition for further evaluation.”

Because of the lengthy delay, officials decided to call the second period, resurface the ice and add the remaining 6:19 of the second period to the third period. A short intermission was given after the first 6:19 back from the delay and signalled the beginning of the third period. Post-game, the Griffins announced that Hirschfeld suffered a seizure on the bench. On Grand Rapids’ website, Hirschfeld’s profile reads that he overcame a seizure “last September.”

Before coming turning pro, Hirschfeld spent four seasons with Ohio’s Miami University. He was the captain of the team in his final season. During his four-year NCAA stint, Hirschfeld scored 35 goals and 70 points in 134 games.
