I've come by this process after years of creating cartoons.

It consists of:

- coming up with the concept (usually writing)
- sometimes doing a rough sketch (but I usually do these in my head)
- gathering reference into the file template I've created
- roughly composing the image
- cleaning up the reference
- final composition (this is called photobashing in industry terms)
- drawing over the image
- doing a color/cleanup pass
- creating the final shadow and lighting passes
- adding any effects (glows etc.)
