Sellers at this year's trade deadline have it good. It is a race to upgrade almost everywhere for buyers and there have already been some big trades around the league for some big returns. The Chicago Blackhawks still have some pieces they can sell, and based on the pieces coming back, they can do well for themselves.

The big topic of discussion surrounding the Blackhawks is what is going to happen with Ryan Donato. It has been reported that he is working on an extension with the Blackhawks, and the price is high if that deal can't get done. Is a team willing to pay if Donato and Chicago can't come to an agreement? I think there's a possibility based on some of the other trades.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were just able to get back a second round pick in the 2025 draft for Anthony Beauvillier, so as reports that Donato is going to cost a first round pick came in, that now makes sense. The Blackhawks had Beauvillier on their roster last season and traded him for a fifth round pick, so that's a pretty significant difference.

Donato has 23 goals and 46 points in 60 games while Beauvillier has 13 goals and 20 points in 63 games. Donato plays all forward positions while Beauvillier has taken just 11 draws this season and won four. I'll give Beauvillier credit, he has already set a career high in hits and has altered his game a little bit, but Donato is a naturally more physical player and is more productive up and down the lineup.

Beauvillier's cap hit of $1.25 million AAV is not too far off Donato's $2 million AAV cap hit in terms of what both bring. There was a time this season when the Blackhawks were hoping for a third round pick in exchange for Donato. Whether they acquire what they're asking for or re-sign him, I think the Blackhawks are in great shape.
