Red Wings prospect Max Plante shatters scoring records, becoming the first NCAA player this season to hit 40 points. Hobey Baker buzz builds.

The Detroit Red Wings may have uncovered another draft gem in one of their most recent selections, Minnesota native Max Plante.

The 19-year-old center, a product of the U.S. National Team Development Program, was selected by Detroit with the 47th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft. While Plante has not yet signed with the organization, his development continues to trend upward as he shines at the collegiate level with the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Plante is enjoying a breakout season with the Bulldogs and has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in college hockey. Despite Minnesota Duluth’s 4-3 loss to Western Michigan on Saturday night, Plante recorded an assist, making him the first player in NCAA hockey this season to reach the 40-point mark.

He has led the nation in scoring for much of the year and currently sits with exactly 20 goals and 20 assists through 26 games, showcasing a rare blend of finishing ability and playmaking at his age.

Plante also represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships this past December and January. His tournament was limited, however, as he reportedly dealt with a minor injury that reduced his ice time and caused him to miss games. He finished the tournament with one goal and no assists across three appearances.

Still just 19 years old, Plante is expected to remain at Minnesota Duluth for at least one more season before making the jump to the professional ranks. That timeline aligns well with Detroit’s long-term development approach and gives the organization additional flexibility as it continues to build its roster.

If Plante’s progression continues on its current path, the Red Wings could eventually add a meaningful, low-cost contributor capable of playing an important role as the franchise pushes toward Stanley Cup contention in the years ahead.
