A struggling prospect ignites Detroit's top line, dramatically altering his season's trajectory and potentially reshaping the Red Wings' future plans.

Marco Kasper was almost out of time as the young forward was potentially on the brink of being sent down after a slow start to the season, the Detroit Red Wings coaching staff made a last-ditch effort to jump-start the 21-year-old forward by elevating him to the top line.

Playing alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, if the move failed, Kasper appeared destined for the same fate as fellow prospect Nate Danielson, who was returned to the minors after his production dried up.

After finishing last season on a high note with 14 points over his final 18 games, expectations were high for Kasper entering his second full NHL campaign. Those hopes quickly faded as he managed just three goals and three assists for six points through his first 47 games, leaving his future with the club very much in doubt. However, the promotion to Detroit’s top line has changed everything and has changed the trajectory of Kasper's season.

Skating with Larkin and Raymond, Kasper has rediscovered his confidence and offensive touch, recording three goals and four assists for seven points over his last nine games. That stretch alone has doubled his season production and offered a glimpse of the player the Red Wings believed they were getting.

The timing could not be better for Detroit as the organization has reportedly been exploring the open market for a second-line center, a role that was expected to belong to Kasper entering the season before he quickly lost his grip on it.

If the Red Wings are unable to strike a deal ahead of the trade deadline due to the high asking prices for players such as Calgary’s Nazem Kadri or Columbus’ Charlie Coyle, the door could reopen for Kasper to reclaim that spot internally.

With Kasper now showing signs of returning to form, head coach Todd McLellan faces new lineup decisions moving forward. What once looked like a looming demotion has turned into a potential turning point, and Kasper’s resurgence could have a meaningful impact on Detroit’s plans as the season unfolds.
