Tim Tebow has tasted success across the sports world and beyond. His latest venture will see the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner move from the gridiron to the ice rink, leading the ownership ground for the latest ECHL franchise in Lake Tahoe.
The League’s Board of Governors approved the expansion application of Lake Tahoe for admittance into the League earlier this summer with Tebow sharing co-ownership along with David Hodges, CEO of Hodges Management Group, LLC. The team will be managed and operated by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment.
“The ECHL proudly welcomes the 29th Member Team to the League in the brand-new Tahoe Blue Event Center, expanding our geography in the western part of the continent, and creating natural rivalries for visiting fans with the Idaho Steelheads, Utah Grizzlies, and the entire Mountain Division,” said ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin in the introductory press conference.
“This new team will offer the only professional sports action in the region, giving locals a hometown team and fast-paced entertainment, with a commitment to giving back and growing the game of hockey in the community. This ownership and operating group have already shown the ability to create a new generation of ECHL fans, and we look forward to the excitement they will bring to South Tahoe.”
The two-time BCS National Champion is no stranger to the game of hockey, owning a minority partnership in the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen and Savannah Ghost Pirates.
“I love that sports can bring people together from all over to enjoy camaraderie, competition, and community impact,” Tebow shared. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of a group bringing hockey to the Tahoe area for fans and families to create memories for years to come.”
The multi-threat quarterback was a phenom during his time with the Florida Gators, smashing numerous passing and rushing records during his time in the SEC, and immediately becoming a sensation during his first year with the Denver Broncos in 2010.
Tebow's NFL career, in which he was a polarizing media figure throughout, saw the Florida native suit up for the Broncos and New York Jets (he would join the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, and Jacksonville Jaguars during offseasons and as a member of their practice squads).
Transitioning to baseball, Tebow signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets, playing outfield in their system from 2016 to 2021.
He is a best-selling author, noted philanthropist, humanitarian, and sportscaster, and will undoubtedly bring the eyes of the sports world to Lake Tahoe for the club's inaugural season in 2024-25.
