The ECHL Department of Player Safety announced that Trois-Rivières forward Jonathan Yantsis has been suspended an additional nine games as a result of his actions in a playoff game against the Norfolk Admirals on April 27.
The incident occurred at the 11:29 mark of the second period when Yantsis hit Norfolk defenseman Darick Louis-Jean (pictured above) from behind and into the endboards after the two were battling for a loose puck.
Louis-Jean remained down while receiving medical attention and had to be stretchered off the ice. As he was being transported off, Louis-Jean gave a "thumbs up" signal to the home crowd, indicating that he had perhaps avoided any serious injury.
Yantsis was handed a match penalty and tossed out of the game. Added, he was suspended from the team's playoff game on April 28.
Norfolk eliminated Trois-Rivières from the postseason in six games, so Yantsis will miss the next nine games for which he is on an ECHL roster, whenever that may be.
At the time of the injury, Louis-Jean had accumulated nine goals, 27 points, and tied for a team-high +20 plus/minus in 59 regular-season games in his second year with the Admirals.
The 23-year-old had a goal and an assist in five postseason games this season for Norfolk.
According to the team, Louis-Jean was cleared the following morning by doctors and is on his way to making a full recovery. The defenseman resumed skating on Tuesday as well.
