Possible Canucks Head Coach Candidates For The 2025–26 Season

With coaching news coming out of the Philadelphia Flyers organization this past week, many have set their sights on how the NHL coaching landscape could look past this season. Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet is currently tied at sixth with seven other coaches for the longest-tenured bench boss in the NHL with their current team. The 2024–25 regular season is Tocchet’s last year of his current contract, though there is an option to extend this by another year from the organization’s side. Rumours have swirled about Tocchet possibly replacing former Flyers coach John Tortorella during the offseason, as the current Canucks coach spent 11 seasons with Philadelphia as a player. In his three seasons and 190 games coached as a member of the Canucks, he has a record of 104–61–25 — good for a points-percentage of .613%. By the time the 2024–25 regular season ends, he’ll be at 200 games coached with Vancouver. In an interview with insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin spoke highly of the current Canucks head coach. “I sure hope that he’s going to be part of this organization moving forward. That’s a conversation that I hope we’ll get to the finish line here sooner rather than later,” he said. Tocchet is the only head coach who is on an expiring deal. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if a few other coaches found themselves jobless by the offseason. The Nashville Predators were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention on Thursday night after narrowly losing 3–2 to the St. Louis Blues. Their season comes as a bit of a surprise to many, as the additions of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, Brady Skjei, and more were expected to make them a genuine contender. However, things got off the rails early, and the Predators were never able to live up to the lofty expectations set for them last summer. Andrew Brunette, Nashville’s Head Coach, has seen success in past seasons such as his 51–18–6 2021–22 season with the Florida Panthers, but his current record (27–37–8) indicates that the Predators may wish to make some changes behind the bench. With that being said, even if Nashville was to move on from Brunette, it’s not likely that he would end up in Vancouver. A team whose trajectory has started trending downhill is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Coming off his 10th season as the Penguins’ Head Coach, Mike Sullivan and his team have not made the playoffs since 2022. While it’s clear that the Penguins organization wants to keep as many pieces of their former Stanley Cup-winning team together, something to consider is the Canucks’ role in this situation. Vancouver’s inclination to acquire players connected to Pittsburgh’s championship teams is no secret — Allvin and President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford, have pointedly targeted players and coaches that they have history with. However, the 2025–26 season is the final year of Sullivan’s contract, and with Pittsburgh’s current situation, it’d make the most sense for them to stick with their Head Coach and make a decision on where their future lies. One candidate to become the Canucks’ Head Coach in the 2025–26 season isn’t very far from home. Former player (2010–13) and assistant coach (2016–20) with the Canucks, Manny Malhotra, rejoined the organization in 2024 as the Head Coach of the Abbotsford Canucks. Previously, Malhotra spent four years with the Toronto Maple Leafs as an assistant coach. With both NHL and AHL experience, as well as familiarity with the Canucks organization, it’d make the most sense for Vancouver’s next Head Coach to be someone who has been ingrained in the team since earlier days. Malhotra has seen the culture of the 2011 Canucks, but was also around for the debuts of Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and Quinn Hughes. The length of his contract is currently unknown. At the end of the day, the Canucks’ Head Coach for the 2025–26 season depends on what the organization decides to do with Tocchet. While this year has been a rollercoaster, Tocchet has managed to keep the team competitive even towards the end of the season. A reset during the offseason may bring the team back to the success they shared in 2023–24. For the time being, Vancouver should opt to continue with Tocchet and move on the season after if the results aren’t there. Canucks Tocchet Provides Injury Updates on Pettersson, Chytil & Höglander

Following practice on Tuesday, Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet provided injury updates on center Elias Pettersson, Filip Chytil and Nils Höglander. Pettersson and Höglander were injured on the recent six-game road trip, while Chytil hasn't played since March 15. As for practice on Tuesday, Höglander was on the ice in a non-contact jersey while Pettersson and Chytil were absent. But when a guy has good days and bad days, you're not going to play the guy." Chytil is dealing with a concussion which occurred late in Vancouver's 6-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Lastly, Tocchet spoke about Höglander, who, as mentioned, was at practice on Tuesday. Tocchet said, "This guy wants to play so bad. He's got a red jersey, which is a good thing, but, you know, obviously no contact. Is he close? He's closer, I guess, than the other guys." The 2024-25 regular season is coming to a close, with the majority of NHL teams having 10 or fewer games remaining. That includes the Vancouver Canucks, who sit just below the playoff bar with 80 points through 72 games. Ultimately, the last few weeks of the season will be chaotic as teams in both the Western and Eastern Conferences battle for 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff berths. If this were to happen, the Canucks would need the San Jose Sharks to do them a huge favour, as they have three more matchups against the Oilers left on the schedule. One of the reasons why this is possible is that, as mentioned, the Oilers are currently dealing with some injury issues. Leon Draisatil and Connor McDavid have both missed the last handful of games, while Stuart Skinner was absent from the lineup on Thursday when they lost to the Seattle Kraken. While all three of these players are expected to return before the end of the season, not having them at 100% could cause some issues as Edmonton looks to secure a playoff berth. With the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, and Utah Hockey Club still in the mix, the next few games will likely clarify the playoff picture much more. This is not a rare situation for this team to be in, as more often than not they have found themselves in a last-minute playoff race to end their season in the past five years. Let’s look back at the Canucks at the final 10 games point of the past five seasons. With eight games remaining, the Vancouver Canucks are in an uphill battle to qualify for the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. At this point, it is likely the Canucks will need to win at least seven of their final games, as the teams above them in standings keep collecting points on a nightly basis. While returning to the post-season isn't likely, it is not an impossible task, especially as Vancouver plays six of their final eight games at home. The Canucks currently has four players on their roster who could lose their eligibility by the end of the campaign. While losing eligibility is not the end of the world, it does show how much Vancouver has relied on young players who have spent time in the AHL this season. Before looking at the four players, it is important to give a refresher on the eligibility rules for the Calder Trophy. According to the NHL, "To be eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. Beginning in 1990-91, a player must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept. 15 of the season in which he is eligible." Victor Mancini is the player most likely to lose eligibility first. The 22-year-old has already played 24 games and will most likely play his 25th either on Saturday or Sunday. While he has been a healthy scratch for the past few games, it is unlikely that he won't get to 26 games by the end of the season. Up next is Jonathan Lekkerimäki, who is up to 22 games. Lekkerimäki is expected to play game number 23 against the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday and should be at 25 before the end of the road trip. While it is likely that Lekkerimäki will hit 26 games, it is not a guarantee and could depend on when Nils Höglander and center Elias Pettersson return to the lineup. Next is defenceman Elias Pettersson, who has played 20 games this season. When looking at the schedule, it is possible that Pettersson could play six of the eight games but may not get to that number if the club wants to rotate Manicni in. In the end, it may take an injury for Pettersson to hit the 26-game mark, meaning it is likely that he will be eligible next season. The fourth and final player is Linus Karlsson, who is currently at 19 games played. While Karlsson will turn 26 next season, he will still be eligible, as his birthday isn't until November 16. Just like Pettersson, it is possible he plays seven of the last eight games, but will most likely keep his eligibility for 2025-26. The Canucks kick off April with a battle on Wednesday against the Kraken. While Seattle has been eliminated from playoff contention, this will not be an easy game, as many players on the Kraken are playing for jobs next season. Derek Forbort has been a great addition to the Vancouver Canucks blue line this season. The 33-year-old has nine points in 48 games and sits fourth on the team with 71 blocked shots. Forbort has also been a key member of the penalty kill, which ranks first in the NHL since February 1. While the left-shot defender usually plays on the left side, lately, he has been playing on the right when partnered with left-shot defenceman Elias Pettersson. As Forbort explains, this is a new challenge, but one that he is already getting used to. "Yeah, it's been pretty new, said Forbort. "I've never really played the right side in the NHL before, but me and (Elias) Pettersson are kind of switching off on it depending on certain situations. He's got a better shot than me, so I'd rather him flying up on that side if I'm always on faceoffs and whatnot. But yeah, just takes a little bit of getting used to." Playing on the oppositie side is no easy task. Many adjustments need to be made, including clearing pucks on the backhand. Another is not drifting out of position, which, as Forbort explains, is a tough habit to break. "You're just used to the same route. So when you go over there, you're not really thinking about that kind of stuff. So you kind of naturally gravitate towards where you usually are. It's different over there, for sure." Pettersson is not the only young defenceman Forbort has been partnered with, as he has also seen time next to Victor Mancini. The two young defensemen are currently rotating in and out of the lineup, with Forbort partnered beside whoever is playing. So far this season, Forbort has played at least 50 minutes of five-on-five with each and is impressed with what he has seen so far from Pettersson and Mancini. "Each are really good players. Can move well. It's little communication things and little routes that you get used to a guy doing that kind of shakes things up a bit. You can tell in every game that they get a little more comfortable. And, you know, they're both great kids. I love working with them after practice and doing little drills with them. It's been really good from that point. They're both confident kids, and that's good when you're coming to the league." Forbort has also been a key part of the penalty kill for the Canucks. As mentioned, since February 1, Vancouver leads the NHL with a 90.7% kill rate. During that time, Forbort has played 49:19, and has been on the ice for two goals for and zero goals against. According to Natural Stat Trick, since February 1, which is the first day after the Canucks made trades with the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins, Forbort has been one of the most efficient penalty killers in the NHL. Of the 119 players who have played at least 40 minutes, he is the only skater not to be on the ice for a goal against. As Forbort explains, communication and being in sync with whoever is on the ice are some of the reasons why Vancouver's penalty kill has been so effective. "I think we're just really dialed into our system right now. I mean, obviously, goals are going to go in just from shots and stuff like that, but we're all really on the same page with our system and different situations and how they present themselves. We know where we have to be at all times and when everyone's on the same page. It makes it a lot easier." In the end, bringing Forbort in has been a smart move by the organization. He has not only had a successful season on the ice, but has turned into a mentor for some of the Canucks younger defensemen, who are expected to make pushed for full-time spots next season. A pending unrestricted free agent, bringing Forbort back for the 2025-26 season is one move Vancouver's management group should highly consider.
