Ovechkin received a stern hit in his EA SPORTS NHL 24 player rating

History has been made. For the first time, Alexander Ovechkin isn't a 90+ rated player in the EA SPORTS NHL video game series.
A roster update was put out back on Jan. 29, which saw the Washington Capitals superstar forward have his overall downgraded to 89 overall. Ovechkin started the year listed at 91 overall. He is now tied with defenseman John Carlson as the highest-rated player on the Capitals in NHL 24.
Ovechkin's first appearance in an NHL video game was NHL 07, where he graced as the cover athlete. Below is a table of his player ratings throughout the years.
He was rated amongst the highest of players always over the years through his insane goal-scoring consistency and became one of the best goal-scorers this game has ever seen.
Unfortunately, has father time started to catch up with the 38-year-old Russian winger? Or is his lack of scoring this season more of a by-product of a Washington team with lackluster firepower amongst its forwards? He's currently on pace to miss the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career.
The Capitals have scored the third-fewest goals this year and have the 28th-ranked powerplay. They have four players with double-digit goals this season, which is only more than Chicago (three) and San Jose (two).
With that being said, he's starting to heat up and has scored in his last five games despite the Capitals posting a 1-2-2 record in their last five.
He continues to chase down Wayne Gretzky's record in goals, sitting 59 back now. He passed Gretzky for the most empty-net goals in NHL history back on Saturday against the Bruins.
Washington hosts Colorado tonight, where Ovechkin will be looking to extend his goal streak to six games. It would mark the sixth time he's had a goal streak of six-plus games in his career and his first since 2018.
