Eight players remain in NHL24 World Championship Europe Finals
The first four rounds of the NHL 24 World Championship Europe Finals were held this past weekend. 128 of the best European NHL gamers loaded up their consoles to fight, claw, and sweat their way to the final eight, which will be a LAN event on Mar. 16.
We teed up this tournament last Friday here.
Sisu "sisu33_" Nurminen won the EU Chel Showdown earlier in the year and came into this tournament as a top dog. Unfortunately, in round two, he faced off against Teemu "Teemuyy" Polttila, who took their best-of-three series 2-1 to upset Sisu.
Teemuyy carried on with his momentum, taking his next two series 2-0 a piece, and will face off against Teemu "temppanen" Karvonen in the quarterfinals.
Temppanen was one of the final four participants at last year's NHL World Championship, finishing in third place. He was also the runner-up to Eki at the 2023 European Championship.
The New Year's Open winner, Jesse "JesseL2002" Linden, also suffered an upset, losing in the second round to Jimi "JJJimbo-" Laitinen.
Erik "Eki" Tammenpää, regarded as possibly the best EU NHL player, advanced to the final eight, but not after having an absolutely nail-biting, thrilling best-of-three against Arttu "Artuzio" Mustila.
After he dropped game one in overtime, Eki was forced to come up with a massive penalty shot save at the start of overtime in game two before scoring the winner moments later.
We should have seen another overtime coming in this series, which we did in the do-or-die game three, which Eki took to qualify him for the LAN portion of this event.
Eki has a decorative NHL ESports career, winning the NHL 2018 World Championship and the 2023 European Championship, which he'll be looking to defend.
He was also the runner-up at the 2023 NHL World Championship last June.
