Russian defenseman Nikita Tryamkin, 30, has signed a three-year contract extension with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg that will run through the end of the 2027-28 season, the KHL club announced recently.

A native of Yekaterinburg, located in the foothills of the Ural Mountains on the Asian side, Avtomobilist is the only KHL club that Tryamkin has ever played for, and it will continue that way for the near future.

At 6’8” and 258 lbs, NHL scouts took notice of Tryamkin when he was young and he was selected in the third round, 66th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Tryamkin joined the Canucks late in the 2015-16 season and then played the full 2017-18 season with the team, recording a total of 11 points in 74 penalty minutes in 79 NHL games.

While Canucks fans were excited about what was to come from the then-22-year-old defenseman in the future, Tryamkin was unhappy with his role on the team and limited ice time, opting to return to Yekaterinburg, where he’s played ever since.

In Avtomobilist’s most recent game, a 4-3 loss to CSKA Moscow on Monday, Tryamkin recorded a goal and an assist. The game marked the grand opening of the team’s new home, UMMC Arena.

Tryamkin has 13 points and 39 penalty minutes in 63 games this season. In his KHL career, he has 148 points in 701 regular-season and playoff games.

Internationally, Tryamkin represented Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship and at the 2018 World Championship.
