Swedish forward Jacob Peterson, 25, has left Rögle BK and signed with rival SHL club Frölunda HC, the latter club announced on Friday.

After spending the last three seasons in North America, Peterson signed as a free agent with Rögle last summer for two years plus an option. However, after producing eight points in 32 games, Peterson and Rögle both agreed to terminate the deal. Peterson then promptly signed a three-year deal with Frölunda, the club with which he played from age 16 to 20.

“It’s fun … this is where it all started and it feels like coming home,” said Peterson. “It’s been fast, but that’s how it is in hockey, and I feel like this has turned out well.”

“This feels good – we were already interested in Jacob before this season,” Frölunda sports director Fredrik Sjöström agreed. “Jacob is a good person and hockey player who knows our environment. We would like to extend a big thank you to Rögle for being able to find this solution together.”

While Frölunda currently sits third in the 14-team SHL with 56 points in 32 games, it’s been a frustrating season for Rögle, which is 11th with 42 points. The team has experienced injury troubles but with some players due back soon, the club has decided to make a move now to open up a roster spot.

“We would like to thank Jacob for his time with us,” said Rögle sports director Hampus Sjöström. “Unfortunately, neither we nor he himself have gotten what we wanted out of the collaboration and therefore we feel that this change will benefit both parties.”

Peterson was a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2017. It would be another four years before Peterson would go overseas, however. Peterson suited up for 122 SHL regular-season and playoff games for Frölunda and Färjestad BK between 2017 and 2021, recording 61 points.

Between 2021 and 2024, Peterson played 83 NHL regular-season games for the Stars and San Jose Sharks, recording 25 points and 18 penalty minutes. He also played three playoff games with Dallas in 2022.

Internationally, Peterson had five points in five games for Sweden at the 2022 IIHF World Championship in Finland.

According to Frölunda’s announcement, Peterson could be in the lineup as early as Saturday’s home game against Örebro.
