German national team center Tobias Eder has cancer

A malignant tumor was found on the 26-year-old during a training camp physical

Tobias Eder, center for the German national team and Eisbären Berlin, was diagnosed with a malignant tumor during his training camp physical, the DEL club announced on Friday. The 26-year-old has already begun treatment.

“In moments like these, the sporting aspect takes a back seat,” said club managing director Thomas Bothstede. “We are all shocked by Tobi’s illness. His news has hit his teammates hard and they have to process it first. The most important thing from now on is Tobi’s full recovery and that he gets well again. That is our top priority. He and his entire family will undoubtedly receive all the support they need from us. We wish them a lot of strength and optimism. We are with them in these difficult times.”

Last season was Eder’s first in Berlin after previously playing in the DEL for Red Bull Munich and Düsseldorfer EG. Last year he had 37 points in 67 combined regular-season and playoff games, helping Die Eisbären to the DEL title. He also played in his first ever IIHF World Championship, playing three games for Germany and scoring one goal.
