KHL club Avangard Omsk announced on Friday that it had terminated the contract of Canadian center Linden Vey. However, the club retains his KHL playing rights.
“Linden has to go back to Canada to manage family issues,” the club’s statement reads.
Vey was born in Wakaw, Sask. and played junior hockey for the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. He was drafted in the fourth round, 96th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In the 2010-11 season, he led the entire CHL with 116 points.
Between 2013 and 2017, Vey recorded 44 points in 138 NHL regular-season games with the Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames. He also played one playoff game with the Canucks in 2015.
Internationally, he played for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang for former Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins. Vey recorded one assist in six games and received a bronze medal.
Vey has played overseas since 2017, mostly in the KHL with Barys Astana, CSKA Moscow and SKA St. Petersburg, but he’s also had stints in Switzerland with the ZSC Lions and in Germany with Adler Mannheim.
In April, Vey signed a one-year contract to play in Omsk. He had 19 points through 20 games with the club.
Omsk currently sits 10th in the KHL Eastern Conference with 15 points in 20 games. The team’s roster still includes ex-NHLers Ryan Spooner, Reid Boucher and Nikolai Prokhorkin, as well as prospects Dmitri Zlodeyev (Vancouver), Semyon Chistyakov (Nashville Predators) and Mikhail Gulyayev (Colorado Avalanche).
