The Edmonton Oilers play once again tonight. They will make their regular season debut at home against the Winnipeg Jets.

But last night featured six other teams getting a crack at their first game. The Utah Hockey Club won over the Chicago Blackhawks by a 5-2 score. The Florida Panthers defeated the Boston Bruins 6-4, and the St. Louis Blues scored three unanswered goals to surprise the Seattle Kraken 3-2.

However, the Blues and Kraken game was historic for a few reasons.

Jessica Campbell became the first woman ever to be a coach in the NHL. She is currently one of Dan Bylsma's assistants.

Secondly, they named former Oilers forward Jordan Eberle as the second-ever captain of the franchise.

The NHL veteran isn't new to being part of the leadership group. Even in Edmonton, he wore an "A" on his sweater for a few years. But it's different being a captain.

Eberle has the right temperament for the job. He is a very calm and collected individual. He knows his limits, but he is an outstanding citizen off of the ice.

In last night's game, Eberle assisted on the game's first goal. He would finish the game with a single assist in 15:58 of ice time.

The Kraken's next game is on Saturday against the Minnesota Wild.
