The Montreal Canadiens have signed top prospect Lane Hutson to an entry-level contract, Elliotte Friedman reported Friday.
Hutson and the Terriers were eliminated from the Frozen Four last night by the Denver Pioneers after a close 2-1 overtime loss.
One of the top defensive prospects in all of hockey, Hutson has been a force for the Terriers over his two seasons roaming the blue line. In 77 career NCAA games, the native of North Barrington, Ill. scored 30 goals and added 67 assists for 97 points. Hutson finished second on the Terriers in total points this season, just behind freshman Macklin Celebrini.
In terms of what he brings to the Canadiens, Habs fans should be excited. Few players in college hockey can see the ice the way Hutson does with the puck on his stick. He has great four-way mobility and edge work that he uses to evade pressure in tight areas and create opportunities for himself.
Hutson is expected to join the Canadiens immediately and could make his NHL debut as soon as Monday, Sportsnet's Eric Engels reported.
