Sommer served as an assistant coach with Holy Cross for the past three seasons

Holy Cross have promoted Castan Sommer to associate head coach, the team announced Thursday.

A product of Shrewsbury, Mass., Sommer served as an assistant coach with Holy Cross for the past three seasons.

Prior to getting into coaching, Sommer enjoyed parts of two seasons as a pro - suiting up in the ECHL and Sweden. Before turning pro, Sommer played four seasons with the Crusaders, collecting 64 points in 148 career games.

Having retired in 2017, Sommer got into coaching right away, joining the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) as an assistant coach prior to the 2017-18 season. Sommer served in that role from 2017-2021 before heading to Holy Cross to join the team as an assistant coach.

Having earned his promotion with the Crusaders, Sommer will now enjoy increased responsibility with the team. Still just 32 years old, it would not be surprising to see Sommer lead an NCAA team in the not so distant future.
