Somerville just finished his senior season at AIC

The ECHL's Wichita Thunder have signed defenseman Nico Somerville to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Hailing from Port Alberni, B.C., Somerville joins the Thunder after having wrapped up his senior season at AIC in 2023-24. In 40 games, he scored four goals and added five assists for nine points.

Over four seasons at AIC, Somerville had seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 110 career games. Prior to joining the Yellow Jackets, Somerville played junior hockey in the VIJHL (Victoria Cougars) and BCHL (Victoria Grizzlies & Penticton Vees).

With Somerville making the jump to the pro game, it is yet to be seen what role he will play with the Thunder. While his offensive numbers never popped in the NCAA, he showed he could produce in the BCHL. A confident puck mover, Somerville should have no troubles adapting to the ECHL level.
