A look at Cup-winning '75 Philadelphia Flyers
A look at some key members of the 1974-75 Flyers, the last Philadelphia team to win the Stanley Cup:
Bobby Clarke, centre: Born in Flin Flon, Man., Clarke was the team captain. He's 60 now and a senior vice-president with the Flyers. Clarke was known for his gap-toothed smile and his viciously aggressive style of play. He was drafted 17th overall in 1969 after many teams passed on him, figuring he might not be able to hack the NHL because he was a diabetic. Clarke would be named league MVP three times and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
Bernie Parent, goaltender: Born in Montreal, Parent is 65 now and living in New Jersey. Parent was playoff MVP both years the Flyers won Stanley Cup, in 1974 and 1975. He was the one player most responsible for the back-to-back championships. Philadelphia originally got him in the 1967 expansion draft when Boston left him unprotected. He was playing for Toronto when he jumped to the rival World Hockey Association. The Flyers acquired his rights from the Leafs for goalie Doug Favell and a first-round pick in the 1973 entry draft. Parent was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
Rick MacLeish, left-winger: A native of Cannington, Ont., he's 60 now and lives in Ocean City, N.J. He devotes a lot of time to the Flyers' alumni association and its activities. MacLeish's winning goal in Game 6 of the 1974 Stanley Cup final against Boston gave the Flyers a 1-0 win and their first championship. The adept stickhandler would lead all point-getters again in the 1975 Cup run with 20, including 11 goals. Boston selected him fourth overall in the 1970 entry draft but he never played for the Bruins, who traded him to the Flyers for Mike Walton.
Bill Barber, left-winger: Born in Callander, Ont., he's 57 now and is a Flyers scouting consultant. Barber was drafted seventh overall in 1972 and quickly became a key cog on a potent line with Clarke and Reggie Leach. Barber scored six goals in each of the championship runs. Barber and MacLeish share the club record with 53 post-season goals each. Barber coached the Flyers from December 2001 to April 2002 and was NHL coach of the year in 2001. He was director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2002 to 2008. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
Andre Dupont, defenceman: Born in Trois Rivieres, Que., the 60-year-old Dupont returned to his home city after his hockey career and operated a sporting goods store. He was drafted eighth overall by the New York Rangers in 1969 and he was playing for St. Louis when the Flyers acquired him. He was nicknamed Moose during his pro days and his best season was 1974-75 when he helped the Flyers win a second straight NHL title. He scored 11 goals and assisted on 21 and served 276 minutes in penalties that season. Dupont was a hard-rock basher who personified the take-no-prisoners approach of his team.
