Carter will be an unrestricted free agent July 1 and has been on the trade block for over a month. He's earning US$2.5 million this year.

"Anson is a veteran NHL player who has had some good goal-scoring years in his career," Canes GM Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "He will help strengthen our forward corps at a much needed time."

Carter, 32, had 10 goals and 17 assists in 54 games with the Jackets this season. He had 33 goals with the Vancouver Canucks last season.

To make room for Carter on the team's 23-man roster, the Hurricanes reassigned winger Ryan Bayda to AHL Albany.
