Jets will wear great throwback jerseys at Heritage Classic, alumni rosters unveiled

The Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers officially unveiled their jerseys for October’s Heritage Classic. The Jets’ jerseys are throwbacks to the original Jets and the team’s WHA days, while the Oilers uniforms are an eye-popping orange, much like their 2015-16 alternates.

Fans in Winnipeg clamored for True North Sports and Entertainment to bring back their beloved Jets and the ownership came through by naming the league’s newest team after the club that departed Manitoba’s capital in the mid-1990s. But with the Heritage Classic coming to Winnipeg in October 2016, the ownership group has gone one step further by bringing the team back in name and style, at least for the outdoor event.

The Jets and Edmonton Oilers officially unveiled their jerseys for the Heritage Classic at an event held in downtown Winnipeg Friday, and the jerseys for both teams will harken back to the heyday of the rivalry between the Jets and Oilers in the 1980s.

For the Jets, the jerseys are a throwback to the earliest iterations of the Jets in Winnipeg. The logo used as the primary mark was introduced to the NHL in 1979 and features a hockey stick acting as the ‘J’, Winnipeg written underneath in arching text and, of course, a jet located in the upper-left corner of the logo.

The color scheme of the threads is simple and classic, but it’s not an exact replica of any jersey the Jets have worn during their NHL tenure. The jerseys have a white base, red collar piping, blue shoulder yoke and alternating blue and red striping along the bottom. The jerseys will be worn with red pants, which have the Jets logo stitched along the leg.

As for the Oilers, their jerseys will look similar to their orange alternate sweaters from the 2015-16 season. Even while Edmonton’s jerseys aren’t anything new, they still evoke the iconic jersey that the team wore during its dynastic years in the ‘80s.

The jersey announcement wasn’t the only news of the day, however, as the Jets and Oilers also announced full squads for the upcoming alumni game — a contest which some fans may actually be looking forward to more than the actual Heritage Classic.

It’s set to be a star-studded affair, with the Winnipeg roster boasting stars such as Teemu Selanne, Dale Hawerchuk and Teppo Numminen, while the Oilers will counter with the legendary Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri.
