NHL trade deadline recap: A team-by-team breakdown of moves made ahead of the trade freeze

Miss out on any of yesterday's deals or want to take a look at who has headed where over the past month? Now that the deadline dust has settled, we've got you covered with a complete look at who has ended up where over the past three-plus weeks.

Yesterday may have been the final day for teams to make moves ahead of the trade deadline, but over the past three-plus weeks, almost every single NHL team has entered into the trade market to improve in one way or another, be it in the present or with an eye towards the future.

Here's a team-by-team look at trades made since the beginning of February as contenders prepare for the stretch run and post-season while those outside the playoff race stock up on futures:

ANAHEIM DUCKS
In: Brendan Guhle, D; Patrick Sielfoff, D; 2019 conditional first-round pick
Out: Brandon Montour, D; Brian Gibbons, C; Michale Del Zotto, D

THN’s Take: The Ducks took small steps towards a rebuild or retooling, whichever you prefer to call it, adding prospect Guhle and a first-round selection. Trading for futures is what Anaheim needs to begin to do, and that process began at and ahead of the deadline.

ARIZONA COYOTES
In: Emil Pettersson, C; Michael Chaput, C
Out: Laurent Dauphin, RW; Adam Helewka, LW; Jordan Weal, C

THN’s Take: Minor moves only for the Coyotes, who didn’t want to move out futures in pursuit of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Adding Chaput gives them an extra hand in the bottom six, however, which will help a banged up roster.

BOSTON BRUINS
In: Charlie Coyle, C; Marcus Johansson, LW
Out: Ryan Donato, RW; 2019 second-round pick; 2019 fourth-round pick; 2019 conditional fifth-round pick

THN’s Take: Depth additions up front which can round out the offense. The Bruins already possess one of the league’s best top lines, and adding Coyle and Johansson gives Boston an upgrade to scoring from the middle six.

BUFFALO SABRES
In: Brandon Montour, D; 2019 sixth-round pick
Out: Brendan Guhle, D; Nathan Beaulieu, D; 2019 conditional first-round pick

THN’s Take: Surprise! The Sabres bought at the deadline, adding puck-moving defender Montour, who can be an asset on the power play and play top-four minutes for the Sabres. They paid a steep price, but the first-round pick will likely end up being the second-highest of the three first rounders Buffalo had entering the 2019 draft.

CALGARY FLAMES
In: Oscar Fantenberg, D
Out: 2020 conditional fourth-round pick

THN’s Take: A relatively quiet day in Calgary, though not for lack of trying on GM Brad Treliving’s part. He was in on Mark Stone, and he reportedly came close to prying Jason Zucker away from the Minnesota Wild. Maybe there was no point in buying big, though, as the Flames have been outstanding all season long.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
In: Tomas Jurco, RW
Out: Cliff Pu, RW

THN’s Take: This is all about who stayed, not who went, as Micheal Ferland remains a Hurricane through the deadline. Carolina is aiming to end their playoff drought and using a so-called “own rental” to get the job done. Bold.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
In: Peter Holland, C; Spencer Watson, LW
Out: Darren Raddysh, D; Matt Iacopelli, RW

THN’s Take: Chicago is in the wild-card hunt, but GM Stan Bowman was honest about his team’s ability. This isn’t a club primed for anything more than a swift exit, even if they make the playoffs. No use selling futures to make this team only marginally better.

COLORADO AVALANCHE
In: Max McCormick, LW; Derick Brassard, C; 2020 conditional sixth-round pick
Out: J.C. Beaudin, C; 2020 third-round pick

THN’s Take: Brassard was a cheap, depth option at center, and a sneaky-good addition by the Avalanche. They were in no position to buy big or move out any of their talented prospects, so adding Brassard while giving up nothing of great value is a win. And hey, Brassard scored in his debut.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
In: Matt Duchene, C; Julius Bergman, D; Ryan Dzingel, LW; Keith Kinkaid, G; Adam McQuaid, D; 2019 conditional seventh-round pick; 2019 seventh-round pick

THN’s Take: All in. The Blue Jackets moved out a total of seven picks and two impressive prospects in order to land a few of the top trade chips and meet all of their perceived needs. It’s finally time for this franchise to win a playoff round. Anything less will be a catastrophic failure, particularly if Duchene and Dzingel join Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky and walk as free agents.

DALLAS STARS
In: Ben Lovejoy, D; Mats Zuccarello, RW
Out: Connor Carrick, D; 2019 conditional second-round pick, 2019 third-round pick; 2020 conditional third-round pick

THN’s Take: The Stars addressed two needs — depth on defense and a second-line scoring option — but Zuccarello’s injury in his first game with the club is a significant blow. The hope is he’ll be back at some point before the season is through. That might be dependent on the Stars making the post-season, though.

DETROIT RED WINGS
In: Madison Bowey, D; 2019 second-round pick; 2020 second-round pick; 2020 conditional third-round pick
Out: Gustav Nyquist, RW; Nick Jensen, D; 2019 fifth-round pick

THN’s Take: Bowey’s upside makes him a nice addition in exchange for Jensen, who was an expiring asset. Two picks in the first three rounds for Nyquist is a nice haul, too. It’s up to the Red Wings’ scouting staff to make the most of the return now.

EDMONTON OILERS
In: Anthony Stolarz, G; Sam Gagner, C
Out: Cam Talbot, G; Ryan Spooner, C

THN’s Take: The Oilers accomplished nothing major at the deadline and now Edmonton must resign itself to another year spent outside the post-season. The franchise will need to do its heavy lifting — moving out dead weight and rejuvenating this roster — come the off-season.

FLORIDA PANTHERS
In: Derick Brassard, C; Riley Sheahan, C; Vincent Praplan, RW; Cliff Pu, RW; Jean-Sebastien Dea, C; 2019 second-round pick; 2019 fourth-round pick; 2019 fourth-round pick; 2020 third-round pick; 2021 seventh-round pick

THN’s Take: No major additions, but a nice haul of picks, including three additional picks in the first four rounds of the coming draft. Flipping Brassard was a no-brainer that brought a decent return for the Cats.

LOS ANGELES KINGS

THN’s Take: Four more picks added to the coffers. Los Angeles needed to start the rebuilding process, and this is the way forward. There’s still plenty of work to be done, however.

MINNESOTA WILD
In: Ryan Donato, RW; Kevin Fiala, LW; 2019 conditional fifth-round pick; 2020 seventh-round pick
Out: Charlie Coyle, C; Mikael Granlund, RW; Matt Hendricks, RW

THN’s Take: Minnesota gets younger with the additions of Donato and Fiala, but the Wild need to continue to refresh one of the oldest clubs in the NHL with youth. Minnesota will be cheering for Boston in the first round of the post-season so as to improve the fifth-round pick to a fourth-round selection.

MONTREAL CANADIENS
In: Dale Weise, RW; Christian Folin, D; Nate Thompson, C; Jordan Weal, C
Out: David Schlemko, D; Byron Froese, C; Michael Chaput, C; 2019 fourth-round pick

THN’s Take: A man of his word is that Marc Bergevin. The Canadiens GM said he had no interest in trading futures for help now. He’s taking the long view and he stuck to the plan by making only minor moves while retaining every piece of his prospect pool.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS
In: Brian Boyle, C; Cody McLeod, LW; Laurent Dauphin, RW; Adam Helewka, LW; Mikael Granlund, RW; Wayne Simmonds, RW

THN’s Take: Nashville kept stride with Western Conference counterparts Vegas and Winnipeg by adding Granlund and Simmonds. The Predators’ top-nine has improved overnight, and Simmonds in particular might be able to help propel a struggling power play.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS

THN’s Take: Three additional picks in the first three rounds of the coming draft for players on expiring contracts. That’s good work by GM Ray Shero. New Jersey now has six picks in the first three rounds of the 2019 draft.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

THN’s Take: This wasn’t the time for the Islanders to go all-in, so they didn’t. As Thomas Hickey and Andrew Ladd prepare to return from injury, the Islanders can go forward with those as their major additions.

NEW YORK RANGERS

THN’s Take: Dark days in Ottawa, but let’s look on the bright side. Ottawa now has 15 picks within the first three rounds of the next three drafts, including seven picks — two firsts, three seconds and two thirds — in the first three rounds of the 2020 draft. That will help speed up the rebuild.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

THN’s Take: The Flyers move out one major trade chip and net a few useful pieces. Hartman hasn’t rediscovered the form he had during his first couple of seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, but he’ll get an opportunity to shine in Philadelphia.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

THN’s Take: Hard to love what the Penguins did at and ahead of the deadline, though Bjugstad and McCann have upside that can benefit Pittsburgh in the both the short and long term.

SAN JOSE SHARKS
In: Gustav Nyquist, RW; Jonathan Dahlen, LW
Out: Vincent Praplan, LW; Linus Karlsson, C; 2019 second-round pick; 2020 conditional third-round pick

THN’s Take: San Jose somehow managed to get better despite having very little left to work with as far as futures are concerned. Nyquist is a top-nine addition with top-six potential who has bolstered the depth. Dahlen is a decent prospect, too.

ST. LOUIS BLUES
In: Michael Del Zotto
Out: 2019 sixth-round pick

THN’s Take: Why mess with a good thing? The Blues are one of the hottest teams in the NHL and have been for some time. No need to alter course.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
In: N/A
Out: N/A

THN’s Take: With a win Monday, the Lightning now have 100 points in 63 games. There’s no reason to even flirt with the idea of changing the roster unless such a deal would have been a massive, massive win for Tampa Bay.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
In: Nicholas Baptiste, RW; Nic Petan, C
Out: Par Lindholm, LW

THN’s Take: Petan has upside and untapped potential, but he was going nowhere fast in Winnipeg. The change of scenery for he and Lindholm can be beneficial. Otherwise, a slow day for the Maple Leafs, and with some uncertainty about the defense corps, one wonders if Toronto will regret the decision.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS
In: Marek Mazanec, G; Ryan Spooner, C; Tanner Pearson, LW; Linus Karlsson, C
Out: Sam Gagner, C; Erik Gudbranson, D; Jonathan Dahlen, LW; 2020 seventh-round pick

THN’s Take: The only gripe would be that Vancouver failed to add any picks. That said, getting rid of Gudbranson’s deal is a win for the Canucks, and Pearson has shown top-six potential in the past. He might be able to recapture that in Vancouver.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
In: Mark Stone, RW; Tobias Lindberg, LW
Out: Erik Brannstrom, D; Oscar Lindberg, LW; 2020 second-round pick

THN’s Take: Hard to argue with landing Stone, the top talent available at the deadline, not to mention reaching a handshake agreement with the winger that will keep him locked down for the next eight years. Quite the get for the Golden Knights, whose top six is supremely talented after this add.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS
In: Carl Hagelin, LW; Nick Jensen, D; 2019 fifth-round pick
Out: Madison Bowey, D; 2019 third-round pick; 2020 second-round pick; 2020 conditional sixth-round pick

THN’s Take: The defending Stanley Cup champions were looking for budget additions that could solidify their depth, and Hagelin and Jensen fit the bill. Hagelin has struggled this season, but Washington will love his experience. Jensen is in the midst of a career year and has already re-signed.

WINNIPEG JETS

THN’s Take: The Jets once again bolster their lineup down the middle at the deadline, this time with Hayes. He offers them size and depth at center, while also allowing for added flexibility when it comes to Bryan Little’s role.
