Ottawa Senators place veteran goaltender Martin Gerber on waivers

OTTAWA - Veteran goaltender Martin Gerber was placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

The 34-year-old from Switzerland has until noon Friday to clear waivers, allowing the Sens to send him to Bighamton of the American Hockey League, or perhaps loan him to a European team as has been rumoured.

Gerber is 4-9-1 with an .899 save percentage and 2.86 goals-against average in 14 games this season, the final one of his $11.1-million, three-year deal.

He became the odd man out in the Senators crease with the emergence of rookie Brian Elliott and was sent to Binghamton on Jan. 15 on a conditioning stint. Alex Auld is the backup in Ottawa.

Gerber is 2-1 with a 2.37 GAA in three AHL games.
