With the season almost upon us and some big trades potentially happening (we are all looking at you Winnipeg) let's break down how trades can impact a player's value when it comes to trades.
Mitch Marner
- Marners cards, especially rookie, had always been a must have in a collection. Playing in a Canadian market and alongside superstars such as Matthews and Nylander had his value steady and high. After his trade to Vegas demand for his cards dipped taking the value with it. With the season he had and the run Vegas went on in the post season (largely due to Marners playoff performance) prices have rebounded but he would be a player to watch. If he or Vegas have a down year there could be changes to value.
Steven Stamkos
- Many were surprised when Stamkos signed with Nashville but were excited for what he would bring. It has been a disappointing time for both him and the organization but how did it affect card collectors? Given that Stamkos is a future Hall of Famer with multiple Stanley Cup rings his value will always be high. However there was a slight dip after he left the Lightning. Going from PSA 10's selling for $450-$550 USD to $380-$450. We will see how another season in Nashville affect those numbers.
Leaving the team that drafted you can lower the value of the card. But can it also raise it?
Jack Eichel
- Back when Eichel was with Buffalo there were a lot of questions as to what his future looked like. Playing for a perennial losing team and facing an unknown with his neck surgery PSA prices were in the $75-125 USD range. While today they are going for $210 - $250.
Matthew Tkachuk
- Leaving Calgary did not instantly change his card value for the better, in fact there was a slight decrease. Winning 2 Stanley Cups and an Olympic Gold? That raised it back up. Surprisingly his pre trade prices are comparable to his present day value, remaining at the roughly $200 USD range for a PSA 10.
So how about the present state of cards? There will always be the demand for Ovechkin, Crosby, MacKinnon, Celebrini, McDavid, but how about players in trade rumors?
Connor Hellebuyck
- My prediction would be if Hellebuyck goes to an original 6 team, large collectibles market or wins a Stanley Cup his value increases, otherwise it will stay steady on the downward trend.
Dylan Larkin
- While his time in Detroit could come to an end soon its no guarantee. If he can be a part of Detroit getting back into the playoffs he could reenter the must have in collection category, but if he is traded to a team with less collector appeal there could be a real negative impact
Trades can definitely play a part in the value of cards, but how the player performs is typically a bigger indicator as to how his value will change.8h
