The Colorado Avalanche have signed Tomas Tatar to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million.

One of the biggest free agent names of the offseason is finally off the market.
The Colorado Avalanche added a big boost to its forward corps on Tuesday ahead of training camp, agreeing to terms with winger Tomas Tatar on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million.
Tatar remaining unsigned this close to training camp simply didn't make sense. The veteran forward is a very effective middle-six winger coming off a 20-goal season as a member of one of the league's best offensive attacks in New Jersey and also won't celebrate his 33rd birthday until after the puck drops on the 2023-24 campaign.
Suiting up in all 82 games for the Devils last season, Tatar racked up 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points while logging roughly 15 minutes in average nightly ice time, carving out a role on the power play and continuing to be an offensive zone threat.
For an Avalanche team that lost the likes of J.T. Compher and Alex Newhook in the offseason, and who also will be without captain Gabriel Landeskog for what could be the whole year, Tatar's arrival significantly bolsters Colorado's forward depth at an extremely reasonable price tag.
Tatar's signing brings the Avalanche to about $7.24 million over the salary cap; once they assign captain Gabriel Landeskog to the long-term injured reserve due to a knee injury, they should only need to clear $237,500 to become cap compliant.
The rich get richer, and the Avalanche are now poised to take a serious run at their second Stanley Cup in three years.
