Report: Evander Kane ‘cleared of wrongdoing’ following Buffalo investigation

Buffalo Sabres winger Evander Kane will not be charged following an investigation made into a December incident that occurred at his Buffalo hotel room. According to Kane’s lawyer, the woman involved in the incident “made no criminal complaint.”

Sabres winger Evander Kane will not face any charges and has been cleared of “any wrongdoing” following an investigation in Buffalo into an incident that occurred in December, according to The Buffalo News.

No charges had ever been filed against Kane, 24, in relation to an investigation into a “sexual encounter” he had with a woman in Buffalo in late December, but The Buffalo News’ Dan Herbeck and Lou Michel reported the investigation began when the woman went to local hospital and “said she could not remember what happened.”

“There was never a criminal complaint filed,” acting district attorney Michael J. Flaherty, Jr., said in a statement via The Buffalo News. “After a careful and diligent examination of all the known facts, including the results of forensic and toxicological testing, neither the provable facts nor the applicable law support the filing of any criminal charges or a prosecution in this matter.”

Kane’s lawyer, Paul J. Cambria, said there was no evidence to file any charge against his client and told The Buffalo News investigation “started in the first place is that something triggered one of these automatic protocols. The young woman made no criminal complaint.” Cambria is the same attorney who represented Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane during the investigation into a rape allegation made against him.

“I spoke to my client,” Cambria told The Buffalo News. “He was relieved, but not surprised in any way, because he did nothing wrong.”

Following news of the investigation, the Sabres said they were taking the investigation seriously and gathering the facts but would not comment further. The NHL added that they were also monitoring the investigation.

“I just want to say I’ve done nothing wrong,” Evander Kane said on Dec. 28. “I look forward to clearing my name. I respect the legal process and, unfortunately at this time, there’s not much more I can talk about.”

The NHL, Sabres and Kane have yet to comment on The Buffalo News’ report.
