The Hockey News

Status: NHL left winger from 1982-1992 for LA Kings, New York Rangers, Minnesota, Calgary and Detroit. Currently serves as the Director of Player Personnel for Washington Capitals.

DOB: Oct. 27, 1958 In: Guelph, Ont.

6-foot-3 Wt: 220 pounds

First Hockey Memory:
"I guess getting my first pair of skates. For Christmas. CCM Tacks."

Hockey Inspirations: "I guess my dad (Mike). We grew up watching the Canadiens play on TV every Saturday night. I think that's the inspiration for wanting to play."

Last Book Read: "Disappearance of the Universe (By Gary Renard)."

Current Car: "I have a Lexus GX 470 (blue)."

Greatest Sports Moment: "Playing on a team that won the Stanley Cup (Calgary)."

Most Painful Moment: "Breaking my neck in juniors. (How did it happen?) Hit the boards, I was hitting the guy and we kinda - I got hit head-first into the boards. Broke two vertebrae."

Most Memorable Goal: "Probably against Chicago in the Western Conference final in the Stanley Cup (with Calgary)."

Favorite Uniforms: "I'd go with Chicago Blackhawks."

Embarrassing Hockey Memory: "I played in the minors. I got hit behind the net, my sweater got caught in the plexiglass and I couldn't get out. (Where?) Portland."

Closest Hockey Friends: "Probably George McPhee."

Funniest Players Encountered:
"Bernie Nicholls was pretty funny. (What about him?) Fun-loving spirit. Always looking to play jokes or laugh at people. Stir the pot a little. Barry Beck was funny. Unique person."

Toughest Competitors Encountered: "That whole Edmonton team in the ‘80s was competitive. They were good. You'd get the feeling that they could take over a game whenever they felt like doing it. It was more of a team competitive thing. They had a lot of good competitive guys. Like, I remember being up one night - we were playing in LA - 6-1 after the second period. We thought we had it. We never touched the puck in the third and we lost 7-6. It was their team - they had the ability to just take over games."

First Job: "I worked at a freezer factory, on the assembly line."

Favorite Sport Outside Hockey: "Golf."

Favorite Players To Watch: "I like to watch Nicklas Backstrom. I like the way he thinks about the game, the plays he makes, how creative he is with the puck."

Funny Hockey Memory: "I mean, do you want a story or a short blurb? (Since we've got some time, a story please.) Bernie Nicholls one night. I knew Bernie Nicholls from playing in LA. And he suckered me into a fight with Jay Miller in LA. And he was laughing at me the whole time when I had to do it. He started the whole thing then he backed off, then he let Jay Miller come in. But then he laughed at me in the penalty box."

Nicknames: "Mac, Big Mac, Grape Ape."

Strangest Game: "I think we played a game in Minnesota one night in a snowstorm where the fans couldn't make it, but both teams were there. And I think there were only a couple thousand people in the stadium. I think it was against Montreal. It was a weird atmosphere because of the storm."

Personality Qualities Most Admired: "People with integrity. Sense of humor. And intelligence."
