The Boston Bruins went to an arbitration hearing with RFA Jeremy Swayman, but they avoided it with Trent Frederic after agreeing on a two-year contract worth $2.3 million per season.
Frederic and the Bruins were scheduled to have their arbitration hearing on Tuesday but narrowly avoided it with the new contract, which puts the 25-year-old under contract through the 2024-25 season.
Boston previously filed a two-year deal worth $1.4 million annually ahead of the hearing, whereas Frederic's camp wanted one year at $2.9 million, more than double the team's proposed cap hit, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Frederic is still getting more than double his previous cap hit of $1.05 million per year after taking a step forward with the Bruins in 2022-23. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound forward ranked second among Bruins forwards in hits, with 105. He also recorded career highs in games played (79), goals (17), assists (14), points (31) and ice time per game (11:55). Six of Frederic's goals were game-winners, which were tied for third on the team behind David Pastrnak's 13 and Patrice Bergeron's seven.
When the playoffs came, Frederic appeared in five of Boston's seven games as the Bruins lost to the Florida Panthers in the first round. Frederic didn't record a point during that time.
Since Boston drafted the St. Louis native 29th overall in 2016, Frederic has 198 regular-season games, 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points split across parts of five seasons.
Boston now has 22 signed players on its roster with about $3.1 million in remaining cap space as they wait for an independent arbitrator to award a contract to Swayman, according to PuckPedia.
