Media rumors and speculation suggest the Buffalo Sabres could kick tires on Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
Eligible for UFA status next July, Connor Hellebucyk's uncertain future with the Winnipeg Jets continues to make him the subject of trade speculation. While some observers wonder if the New Jersey Devils will make a pitch for the 30-year-old goaltender, the Buffalo Sabres could also come calling this summer.
The Athletic's Michael Russo and Eric Duhatschek reported hearing that the Sabres have an interest in Hellebuyck. Landing a proven No. 1 goalie could be the last piece that turns them into playoff contenders. It would also buy them some time until promising Devon Levi is ready to take over the starter's job.
Matthew Fairburn weighed in on his colleagues' report, believing Hellebuyck would be the Sabres' best option given the limited choices in this summer's free agent and trade markets. He doesn't advocate parting with top prospects such as Matthew Savoie or Jiri Kulich to get him but believes it would be worthwhile if the Jets' asking price is more reasonable.
The Buffalo News' Lance Lysowski was more skeptical. He agrees that Sabres GM Kevyn Adams should conduct due diligence by checking into Hellebuyck's availability. However, he considers it unlikely that Adams can land him, pointing to a potentially high cost to acquire a player who could depart next summer as a free agent.
So far, there's no indication out of Winnipeg regarding the Jets' plans for Hellebuyck. They can't start contract extension talks until July 1 but could attempt to peddle him before then if they feel he's reluctant to stay beyond next season.
