The Calgary Flames are going in a new direction after parting ways with GM Brad Treliving.
Don Maloney's been promoted from the senior vice president of hockey operations to the president of hockey operations, and he will serve as the interim GM in the meantime.
"We are grateful of Brad's contributions over the past nine years and wish him every success in his future, both personally and professionally," CSEC president and CEO John Bean said in a statement. "But for our fans and our business, we need to move forward, and we are confident with Don's experience that we will find the right general manager to build on Brad's work and lead our team to the Stanley Cup."
The news comes after the Flames missed the playoffs for the fourth time in the nine seasons Treliving's been their GM. In 700 regular-season games at the helm, Treliving had a 362-265-73 record.
Just last May, the Flames entered the playoffs as the top team in the Pacific Division, amassing 50 wins and 111 points. They narrowly won their first-round series against the Dallas Stars before losing in five games to the Edmonton Oilers.
This season, with Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk replaced by Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, and MacKenzie Weegar, Calgary looked to remain on track as a contender in the Western Conference. Instead, they posted a 38-27-17 record and fell two points short of a wild card, three points considering the Winnipeg Jets would have held the tiebreaker.
Typically when a GM exits an organization, the coach that served under them isn't too far behind. That will seemingly not be the case here, however, as Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reported the early indication is Darryl Sutter will remain as the coach for now, suggesting the former Jack Adams winner's job status is secure, at least until a new GM is named.
As for Calgary's front office future, Maloney will take the reigns over all hockey operations after serving as a vice president of that department for the Flames for the past five years. Maloney notably has experience at the helm of an NHL organization, having previously served as the GM, executive vice president and alternate governor for the Arizona Coyotes from 2007 to 2015.
With the playoffs set to kick off on Monday, the Flames now have roughly two months to conduct a search for Treliving's replacement before the draft and free agency come over the horizon, a search which will likely be led by Maloney.
