The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Sean Monahan to a one-year contract extension.
The Montreal Canadiens kicked off their offseason with a shrewd little move on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with forward Sean Monahan on a one-year contract extension worth $1.985 million.
Monahan would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1 with the ability to test the open market, but clearly decided to remain with the club he achieved modest success with after a rash of injuries.
In 25 games with the Canadiens last season, Monahan racked up an impressive six goals and 11 assists for 17 points while winning 55 percent of his draws in the face-off circle and logging upwards of 17 minutes in average nightly ice time. While injuries did rob him of nearly three-quarters of the season, Monahan showed glimpses of the 30-goal, point-per-game forward he was at his peak back in Calgary. That version of Monahan may be gone at this point thanks to the wear and tear of his health struggles over the years, but if the Canadiens can get even a fraction of that production from him, this signing will look like a steal.
Monahan ended the 2022-23 season on LTIR and will hopefully be looking to use his extended recovery time to hit the ground running in October.
