The Washington Capitals are shuffling their front office a bit before training camps start, promoting Brian MacLellan to the role of GM-president of hockey operations, Chris Patrick to the role of associate GM while also appointing Dick Patrick to the role of team chairman.
MacLellan will now serve the dual role of president and GM, having been in the latter post since 2014 while spending a total of 23 years as a member of the Capitals organization. Throughout MacLellan's time as GM, the Capitals have posted a record of 409-213-77, winning one Stanley Cup and two Presidents' Trophies in the process.
Chris Patrick has also spent considerable time within the Capitals' organization, entering his 16th season with the club. After a long tenure as a scout, Patrick was promoted to assistant GM and oversaw the team's scouting staff and the AHL's Hershey Bears, who won the Calder Cup in 2023.
Dick Patrick, on the other hand, has had a hand in the business affairs of the Capitals for quite some time. The 76-year-old served as one of owner Ted Leonsis' original partners.
The Capitals head into the season looking to bounce back after missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2013-14 and just the second time since 2006-07. MacLellan chose to bring in a new coach, replacing Peter Laviolette with rookie NHL bench boss Spencer Carbery. They had their first top-10 pick in the NHL draft since 2007 in forward Ryan Leonard, and they added winger Max Pacioretty and defenseman Joel Edmundson during the off-season as well.
