The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday that forward Nicklas Backstrom will be stepping away from the game for an undetermined amount of time given his ongoing injury situation.
"This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time," said Backstrom in a statement.
"I want to thank my teammates, the organization, and the fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. I ask for privacy at this time as I determine my next steps and viable options moving forward."
Backstrom, 35, underwent hip resurfacing surgery back in June 2022, an invasive procedure that carried with it a lengthy recovery timeline. Miraculously, Backstrom returned to on-ice activities within four months and managed to suit up in 39 games with the Capitals the following season, during which he racked up seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points.
Given Backstrom's age and the seriousness of the procedure, however, it's not surprising there could remain some lingering effects, and Backstrom will now take the coming months to heal his body before making a decision on the future of his career.
"We stand behind Nicklas and will support him throughout this process," said Capitals GM Brian McLellan in a statement.
"We know firsthand how hard he has worked and how determined he is to get back to full health."
Backstrom has played all 17 of his NHL seasons for the Capitals after being drafted fourth overall by the club back in 2006. In 1,105 career games, the Gavle, Sweden, native sits with 271 goals and 762 assists for 1,033 points and was a key part in the franchise's first-ever Stanley Cup victory in 2018.
