It's been a busy day in Washington D.C.
The Washington Capitals capped off their flurry of pre-deadline trades with a signing on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with defenseman Nick Jensen on a three-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $4.05 million.
The details of the deal, which ties Jensen to Washington through the 2025-26 season, such as its salary structure or the inclusion of any trade protection, have yet to be determined.
After a whirlwind day for the Capitals organization, it's nice for fans to see the club lock someone in instead of sending them out.
Jensen has long been a favorite of the analytics community, producing highly favorable results in most possession and defensive metrics throughout his career to make him somewhat of an underrated asset.
This season, however, has seen Jensen develop a scoring touch as well, as the 32-year-old has racked up two goals and 22 assists for a career-high 24 points in 62 games, all while logging nearly 21 minutes in average ice time.
Given the significant roster turnover that has taken place over the past week or so, Jensen is now joined by newly acquired Rasmus Sandin as the only healthy Capitals defenders under contract through next season.
With the organization hoping to quickly re-tool to make the most of franchise face Alex Ovechkin's remaining years, Jensen will likely remain a key piece on Washington's blueline throughout his new extension.
