Capitals Sign Trevor van Riemsdyk to Three-Year Extension

The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a three-year contract extension.

It's been a busy stretch drive in D.C. 

The Washington Capitals made yet another forward-facing move on Saturday, agreeing to terms with defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk on a three-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $3 million. 

The deal now ensures the 31-year-old pending UFA will not hit the open market this coming summer and will instead be tied to Washington through the 2025-26 season. 

Van Riemsdyk has risen to the challenge on a depleted Capitals team this season, racking up seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 66 games, all while logging 19 minutes in average ice time. 

That workload has skyrocketed to a preposterous rate in the games following the trade deadline, with van Riemsdyk finishing the Capitals' most recent contest having played a whopping 27:23 in ice time. 

It's not exactly a surprise to see this uptick in responsibility. With Dmitry Orlov gone, van Riemsdyk is arguably his team's most reliable defender, and his ability to keep the Capitals in the playoff hunt despite aggressively selling off all their expiring assets has now earned him a shiny new deal. 

As Washington shifts its focus to the future, van Riemsdyk is yet another key piece they've locked in for the years ahead.
