Johan Nilsson, the founder of Elite Prospects, has died, the publication announced Thursday. He was 45.

Nilsson had battled colon cancer for the past nine years. He founded Elite Prospects at 18 years old in December 1999.

"Johan had a rare combination of qualities: sharp intellect, deep knowledge, and a kindness that made everyone around him feel valued," Elite Prospects said in a statement.

Rest in peace, Johan. Thank you for everything you've done for hockey and our world.
