Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone CelebrateMatvei Michkov and Porter Martone Celebrate

Ten games into his NHL career, Porter Martone is making people forget about Matvei Michkov's sophomore slump.

The Philadelphia Flyers' 2025 sixth overall pick has exploded onto the scene with four goals and 10 points through nine regular season games, including an overtime winner against Boston. He's added 32 shots on goal, two power play tallies, and the kind of physical edge that's been missing from Philadelphia's lineup all season. Meanwhile, Michkov just finished a disappointing second year with 51 points in 81 games; a 12-point drop from his 63-point rookie campaign.

The creativity is still there, but the consistency isn't. And while Martone crashes the net and tilts ice through physicality, Michkov has struggled to impose himself when games tighten up.

The Stylistic Divide

This isn't just about production; it's about identity. Michkov is a 5-foot-10 skill winger who thrives with time and space to create. He's got elite vision and crafty hands, but he's not winning board battles or clearing the crease. At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Martone plays a power forward's game; driving the net, finishing checks, and creating chaos in high-danger areas.

"Been the best times of my life coming in here, living out a childhood dream to play for the Flyers."

Porter Martone

The Flyers desperately needed what Martone brings. Philadelphia has been soft for years, getting bullied out of playoff contention and struggling to generate offense when structure tightens. Martone changes that calculus. He creates space for teammates simply by being on the ice, and his willingness to go to the net opens up passing lanes that didn't exist before. Since Martone signed his entry-level contract on March 29th after Michigan State's season ended, the Flyers went 6-3-0. That's not a coincidence. He's given them a physical edge and scoring punch they've lacked, playing meaningful minutes alongside Travis Konecny and Christian Dvorak.

The Playoff Test

Martone is about to face his biggest challenge. The Flyers open the Eastern Conference First Round against Pittsburgh on Saturday, and playoff hockey rewards players who can win battles, finish in traffic, and elevate when stakes are highest. Martone's power forward skill set is built for May and June. Michkov's finesse game; while effective in open ice; tends to disappear when referees swallow their whistles. Michkov did finish the regular season strong; 22 points in 26 games after the Olympic break. But that late push came when Philadelphia was already locked into a playoff spot and pressure had evaporated. When games mattered earlier in the year, Michkov was a passenger far too often.
