The Tampa Bay Lightning announced their rink will now be called Benchmark International Arena. That got me thinking... what's the benchmark for a historically great hockey arena name?
Perhaps it's a name that rolls off the tongue, is named after a local legend or has some unique wording. But maybe it's just a gut call.
The Scotiabank Saddledome is the best active arena name among NHL teams. Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre was initially and briefly called the Palladium, which is defined as something that affords effectual protection or security, so that was pretty cool. Then you have Maple Leaf Gardens, Olympia Stadium, Joe Louis Arena, Boston Garden, Montreal Forum, Cow Palace and surely many more that are memorable names.
In other leagues, there's Avicii Arena (Stockholm, read a cool feature about it here), Rocket Arena (Cleveland) and Ice Palace (St. Petersburg) that come to mind.
