The optics look terrible when the NHL gave Gudas a phone hearing before the severity of Auston Matthews’ injuries was even known.

Now that it’s been announced Matthews will miss the rest of the season with a torn MCL, the league’s decision to suspend Gudas for no more than five games looks even worse.
