Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports - Could The Vegas Golden Knights Trade Jonathan Marchessault?

One of only five remaining original members of the Vegas Golden Knights, Jonathan Marchessault is entering the final season of his current contract. That's given rise to speculation over his future with the club.

Marchessault won the Conn Smythe Trophy for his clutch scoring during the Golden Knights' march to the Stanley Cup this spring. However, Vegas Hockey Now's Chris Gawlik noted that the 32-year-old winger recently told TVA Sports that he hasn't had any contract extension talks yet with management.

While Marchessault acknowledged that the Golden Knights tend to take their time with contract negotiations, Gawlik suggested it's possible he could be traded before his deal expires at the end of this season.

Gawlik believes Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon understands that Marchessault will be a hot commodity in next summer's free-agent market. He could try to get something in return rather than lose the winger to free agency.

It wouldn't be the first time McCrimmon has moved out a popular member of the Golden Knights. He shipped Marc-Andre Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks after winning the Vezina Trophy in 2020-21. On June 28, winger Reilly Smith was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The writing was on the wall for Fleury when they acquired Robin Lehner the previous year plus the Golden Knights needed to clear cap space. Smith's trade was a cost-cutting move after they re-signed Ivan Barbashev.

Marchessault remains among Vegas' top-six forwards. With Lehner on long-term injury reserve, they don't have to shed salary with a trade to start this season.

McCrimmon could peddle Marchessault if the Golden Knights are out of playoff contention by the trade deadline. Otherwise, he'll likely retain him for another run at the Cup.
