Another young player is off the board.

The Arizona Coyotes fortified their core on Sunday, agreeing to terms with forward Matias Maccelli on a three-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $3.425 million.

The deal ties Maccelli to the Coyotes through the 2025-26 season and will pay him $3 million in 2023-24 and $3.025 million in 2024-25 before jumping to $4.25 million in the final year, according to PHNX Sports' Craig Morgan. Maccelli will still be an RFA upon the expiry of this new deal.

Maccelli was something of a pleasant surprise for the Coyotes last season, coming out of nowhere to rack up 11 goals and 38 assists for 49 points in 64 games for a productive first full NHL campaign. The 22-year-old represents a drafting boon for the Coyotes, who picked him 98th overall back in 2019 and are now reaping the rewards.

Not to mention, Maccelli will almost certainly be in a better position offensively next due to the Coyotes' improved roster, with the club being able to give him better linemates and more than the 43.2 percent share of offensive zone starts he received in 2022-23.

In a dour off-season, the Coyotes finally get a glimmer of good news.
